Area surveillance cameras show the 20-something robber “pacing up and down Main Avenue with the mask on, carrying a hammer the size of an ax” around 7:40 a.m., Detective Capt. Shawn Kudlacik said.
“Either nobody saw anything or nobody said anything,” Kudlacik said.
Eventually, the 6-foot-tall robber went into the Citgo station office, yanked the attendant from his chair and hit him several times with the hammer, demanding money, before fleeing with cash, the captain said.
That was also caught on camera, he said, adding that the station owner was totaling how much was robbed.
A Bergen County Sheriff’s K-9 unit tracked the robber but lost the scent, he said.
The attendant was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of cuts and other injuries.
